Morrison Energy Services to support SSE Renewables’ Monk Fryston battery project

14th May 2024

Morrison Energy Services, a part of M Group Services’ Energy Division, has been selected as the principal contractor for the Balance of Plant works for SSE Renewables’ battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Monk Fryston, Yorkshire.

The Monk Fryston project marks SSE Renewables’ largest 320 MW battery storage project and, once operational, will be one of the largest battery storage systems in the country, capable of powering over half a million UK homes for up to two hours at a time.

As part of SSE Renewables’ drive to manage energy demands and achieve the UK’s net zero targets, the Monk Fryston BESS will be capable of storing power for release back to the grid when needed the most, helping to manage peaks in energy demand.

The contract, which was finalised in November 2023 and will last for three years, marks the first time Morrison Energy Services has worked with SSE Renewables.

Throughout the project, Morrison Energy Services will oversee and manage the complex design, installation, and commissioning of the BESS development, as well as the design and procurement of major pieces of equipment, including transformers and switchgear.

Morrison Energy Services will also support the final connection to the existing National Grid substation.

Donnie Whyte, Managing Director of Distributions and Connections at Morrison Energy Services said: “We are proud to have been selected by SSE Renewables for this flagship BESS project in Yorkshire. The design and construction of complex electrical infrastructure is core to our business as is our aim to support key clients such as SSE in their investment in the UK’s journey to a net zero future.”

Richard Cave-Bigley, Director of Solar & Battery – SSE Renewables, said: “We’re excited to be working with Morrison Energy Services on what is our largest battery storage project to date.

“Projects like our battery storage facility at Monk Fryston are crucial in reaching the UK’s net zero goals and being able to harness the abundance of energy generated from our existing renewables portfolio.”

Morrison Energy Services will support SSE Renewables in the shared goal to deliver renewable energy solutions, to help manage energy supply and demand more effectively, as well as maximise the potential of available renewable energy to power the grid. M Group Services is committed to reaching net zero, across all its operations, including its supply chain, by 2050.
