Morrison Energy Services to support National Grid’s Yorkshire GREEN Project

25th April 2024

Morrison Energy Services’ Electricity Transmission, a part of M Group Services’ Energy Division, has been selected to deliver the Yorkshire GREEN Energy Enablement (GREEN) Project, on behalf of client, National Grid.

Yorkshire GREEN is the first of National Grid’s projects in alignment with the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) schemes. The ASTI schemes are the biggest investment in the UK Transmission Network since the 1960’s and will include building over 11,000 new towers across the country in the next seven years.

The Yorkshire GREEN project will allow more renewable and low carbon energy to move onto the electricity grid and into homes and businesses both in Yorkshire and further afield.

A nationally significant infrastructure project, Yorkshire GREEN is a part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations. This project supports the UK government’s net zero targets, enabling a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient energy system.

The overhead line works will include the reconfiguration of the lines around the existing Poppleton and Monk Fryston substations. This is the first National Grid project to install the Aluminium Composite Core Conductor (ACCC) Leipzig, which allows significantly more capacity to be transmitted when compared to more traditional conductor configurations.

Morrison Energy Services’ support for enhanced technologies has also required a significant investment in new machinery and equipment to facilitate the installation techniques required.

Morrison Energy Services’ Electricity Transmission will deliver the new overhead line and the refurbishment to the existing overhead line close to York. The work, which is scheduled to begin in the late summer of 2024, is set to be completed by December 2028 and provides another opportunity for Morrison Energy Services to grow and develop its workforce to support the increasing amount of new electricity infrastructure to be installed in the strive to net zero.

Dale Watkinson, Head of Portfolio at Morrison Energy Services’ Electricity Transmission, said: “Morrison Energy Services’ Electricity Transmission is proud to have been selected as an integral part of this nationally significant infrastructure project and is looking forward to supporting National Grid as they commence work helping the UK Government achieve its net zero ambitions and drive for future energy security.”

Throughout this project, Morrison Energy Services will be supporting National Grid in the shared goal to deliver renewable energy solutions. M Group Services is committed to reaching net zero across its business, including its supply chain, by 2050.
