Morrison Energy Services helps deliver greener rail travel in South Wales

17th August 2023

Morrison Energy Services, a part of M Group Services’ Energy Division, has collaborated with its client, National Grid, to deliver future proof sustainable travel within the South Wales region. By creating a brand-new grid connection, they have enabled trains on the line to be electrified for the very first time.

The work undertaken by Morrison Energy Services has allowed Transport for Wales (TfW) to electrify a significant part of the track on its historic Core Valleys Lines (CVL). The electrification of the track allows the rail operator to replace noisy and less environmentally friendly diesel trains with faster, greener battery-electric hybrid solutions.

Morrison Energy Services collaborated with National Grid, TfW and other contractors to engineer two bespoke 275/25kV traction transformers, as National Grid’s standard trackside transformers were three times the electricity capacity required. The connection also required an extension to the existing National Grid Upper Boat 275kV substation.

Michael Winch, Head of Delivery at Morrison Energy Services, said: “The successful completion of the Upper Boat project is a testament to the dedication, commitment and professionalism of the Morrison Energy Services, National Grid and Transport for Wales project teams, with a targeted focus on collaboration and safety to overcome significant technical challenges. Morrison Energy Services is committed to working with our clients to support the transition to greener energy and travel solutions.”

The achievement marks significant progress in the Welsh Government’s wider plans to provide a South Wales Metro, to better connect the community with an integrated network of bus, rail and active transport to make sustainable travel easier across the region.

At M Group Services, we are committed to working with our clients to find sustainable solutions to ensure a future of greener travel. Our focus on sustainability is an essential element of our Group environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. As a Group, we are committed to reaching net zero by 2050.
