Morrison Energy Services awarded International Green Apple Award

9th December 2021

Morrison Energy Services has recently received an International Green Apple Award for ‘Environmental Best Practice’ for its use of an innovative solar pod to power office cabins at its Bromley-by-Bow depot.

The Green Apple Environment Awards were established in 1994 as an annual campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice on a global scale.

The Bromley-by-Bow depot in London consisted of mobile office cabins, and the team identified a Hussh Pod as a low carbon, efficient and cheaper alternative to the traditional diesel generator that was used to power the cabins. The Hussh pod is a battery bank combined with a solar panel which takes excess power from the generator set and solar gains to charge the batteries. The energy in the batteries is then used to power the office cabins, resulting in impressive CO2 and NOx reductions and cost savings.

The system was in place from September 2019 to March 2021. The site experienced an average 84% reduction in the run time of the generator set, which saved approximately 57,000 litres of diesel and the carbon equivalent of 157 CO2e. The Hussh pod also contributed to better comfort and wellbeing of office staff and local residents, through noise reduction and improved air quality.

Other benefits included a reduction in maintenance and service intervals for the generator, a reduction in vehicle movements associated with fuel deliveries and the mitigation of fuel spillages in the depot.

Congratulations and well done to everyone involved!

Back to all.
