Inspiring the apprentices of today

19th January 2023

At M Group Services, we are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the next generation of highly skilled, forward-thinking, customer-focused and technically competent people.

We spoke to Leo Shinn, High Voltage Electrical Fitter Apprentice on Morrison Energy Services’ UK Power Networks contract, to hear about his experience joining M Group Services’ award-winning Apprenticeship Development Scheme (ADS).

Q. How did you find out about Morrison Energy Services?
A. One of Morrison Energy Services’ High Voltage Electrical Fitters visited my school as a STEM Ambassador. They talked about Morrison Energy Services as well as teaching us some key skills such as how to wire a plug.

When I was 16, during my GCSE year, the school required us to do work experience. As a result of the visit, I chose to shadow a couple of fully qualified electrical fitters from Morrison Energy Services.

Q. What made you decide to do an apprenticeship with us?
A. I completed my A-Levels in Criminology, Sociology and Business and I knew University wasn’t for me.

I decided that I wanted to do something hands on and was keen to learn on the job. After my work experience, I kept in touch with Mick Murray, Senior Contracts Manager on Morrison Energy Services’ UK Power Networks contract, who recommended I apply for Morrison Energy Services’ apprenticeship.

Even though my A-Level subjects aren’t relevant to my current role, there were still opportunities for me to start in my desired career at Morrison Energy Services. You don’t necessarily need to have experience in your desired area.

Q. You recently signed up to be a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Ambassador. Why did you decide to register
A. I’ve been on my apprenticeship for a year and a half, I really enjoy it and am learning a range of important skills. As a result, I wanted to go into schools and talk about my experience and how apprenticeships are a great option. Why not share my experience with younger people?

M Group Services is committed to supporting and educating the next generation. Launched in 2019, our Group-wide ADS is inspiring people to take up careers that will ensure the UK and Ireland’s infrastructure continues to develop.

Our programme, which won Apprenticeship Programme of the Year at The Learning Awards 2022, supports the personal and professional development of our apprentices.

We currently have 122 registered STEM Ambassadors, and we take pride in our people helping the next generation to develop their knowledge and understanding about what we do.
